Discipline in education has changed drastically every single decade in the United States. Grandparents reminisce about the days when they were sent out side the school building to find a “switch” that they teachers would use to rap their knuckles when misbehaving. The days of dunce hats and humiliation in corners is long behind us, but the fluffy love lack of discipline in schools today is becoming just as harmful to students as the days when beatings were a daily occurrence.
In most public education grade level schools nowadays, teachers are not allowed to do so much as take away recess or put a misbehaving child in time out. It is the age of helicopter parents — parents who constantly hover over the teacher’s domain and are ready to jump into action with e-mail writing to higher authorities as soon as their beloved child does not get an A or is verbally chastised for acting out in class. Children at home in this decade are being encouraged to act as they want, a showing of their individuality and creativity some parents claim. This activity, while under the discretion of parents at home, is causing damage to the class room where students are becoming more and more unruly with little respect shown to the elder authority, the teacher or principals, in the learning environment. When students are being continually disruptive with no consequence, the education level of the class room is decreasing as more time is being spent dealing with these children rather than time being put into teaching the curriculum.
When a child acts up, there must be some kind of consequence to show them that their behavior is not acceptable in a class room setting. Though corporal punishment is well out of the question, punishment along the lines of taking away recess or the more fun activity times is in no ways unfair to the children. There must be repercussions for actions that negatively affect a child’s learning, the learning of the other children in the class room, and the time that they teacher much put in to dealing with these matters. In order to best be able to teach students, a teacher must be able to maintain control over their class room.
When students are constantly allowed to escape punishment or any kind of repercussions after bad behavior has been made, they are opening up a can of worms that allows all of the other students to view negative and disruptive behavior as something that should be lauded rather than frowned down upon. When just one student is allowed to get away with disrupting a class room, the others, being young and having minds like sponges that absorb and mold to what ever they see, pick up these behaviors and imitate them, making the whole learning experience very hard for the children and the teaching experience hard for the teachers.
Order must be maintained in a class room setting so that all people, students ane teachers, can learn.
Education and the arts to the modern ear sound like two separate entities. These two things, however, should be known as not two separate things, but two parts of a whole. We all have heard the factoid that the brain is separated into two hemisphere, the right (creative) and the left (logical.) These two parts working together can meld into the brightest solutions, but modern education is separating them into different areas that are separate and unequal. Arts funding in education has been a hot topic for longer than we all can remember. Maths and sciences have taken precedence over the arts in recent years, with arts being slowly pushed back further and further.
What the schools need to consider is combining the areas. Music is highly mathematical in the way it is structured. One must be able to read notes on lines and translate their relationships to one another in order to properly calculate how the note should be played and tuned. The visual arts have a high basis in science. Visual structures focus on Gestalt theories and color theories in order to best understand the creations that are being made and why things that are considered beautiful and complex are. Schools need to focus on these parallels between the arts and sciences in order to work a child’s mind in the right way to best be able to become a knowledgable human being later in their life without regard to what task it is in particular that they will be doing for a career.
Children should be being taught, rather than facts and memorization, how to be a logical thinker and how to effectively solve problems. It is only in this way that children will grow up to be able to clean up all of the problems that one, their predecessors left for them, and two, what ever new problems will arise in the future (talking apes perhaps, who knows?) The combination of the arts and sciences works well to teach the logical thinking and problem solving that the world is in so desperate need of in its workforce. It does not matter if a child will grow up to be a mechanic or a physicist; in both realms of the job market, it is essential to be able to take the problems presented — whether they be a block in a car’s engine or how to get the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to find the Higgs Boson — and use logic to figure out steps to solving the provided problem. It takes both the right and left hemispheres of the brain to be able to think creatively and logically — which are the two puzzle pieces required in being an effective problem solver.
The current education system focuses too much on facts and keeping the creative children in their band rooms and the mathematicians in their desks and not enough on collaboration and problem solving in every single facet of education. Education must combine them to help.
